# 2026-07-20 — Attack/ability feel guidelines (research session)
**Trigger:** operator on the 07-19 pass — "the size of the swings don't line up visually"; asked for a
research-based, game-grounded guideline set for attacks/abilities (clarity, feel, animation), prompted for review.
Scope locked by operator: full combat grammar · research-derived reach proposal · references = SoD + Hades +
V Rising + Souls/MH + D4/PoE2/LE.
**What shipped:** [[Combat_Attack_Feel_Guidelines]] (`02_Game_Design/`, status DRAFT — pending operator review).
R1R9 research canon (three-phase anatomy, player/enemy anticipation inversion, weight-through-time, D4 payload
honesty + read hierarchy + emissive-in-dark rule, Sakurai hit-stop canon, WildStar telegraph color/fill canon,
GoW cancel taxonomy, juice optimum, SoD kit grammar) → G1G8 LANTERN rulebook → 7 review forks incl. the
swing-size fix package (damage-at-contact-tick, range 2.6→2.2 + finisher reach ×1.25, weapon ×1.25 + tip trail).
**Research provenance:** deep-research workflow `wf_1e5183c1-13c` — 5 angles, 21 sources, ~95 claims. Ran into
session-quota agent deaths TWICE (the known masquerading-as-clean failure); resumed with `resumeFromRunId` per
memory protocol (cached search/fetch replayed free). Final: 12 confirmed 3-0/2-0, **0 refuted**, 13 unverified
(quota-killed votes; quote-backed). Synthesis step died both times — the doc synthesizes from the raw verified
claim inventory (journal.jsonl) instead. Gap flagged in-doc: Hades/PoE2/V Rising primary material resisted
extraction (video sources) — optional follow-up frame-count session.
**Quantified driver:** camera Distance 13 / FOV 55° ≈ 13.5 m visible plane → the 2.6 m arc = ~20% of screen
height vs the axe+arm ~1.71.8 m; finisher 3.9 m arc reads >2× the weapon. Damage also lands at `SwingStartTick`,
~16 ticks BEFORE the animation's blade contact — dishonest in size and in time.
**Next:** operator reviews the fork table (7 items) in the guidelines doc; approved items become the next
implementation session (damage-at-contact is the netcode-touching one — needs the ★ pre-code review).
